Last week we visited Bill’s church in Marshall. His church family put together an evening to celebrate Bill and Dee’s 30 years of service at Marshall United Methodist Church. I don’t know how many people were there, but the place was full. Longtime friends and family came to celebrate their lives and their service for God.
Bill has battled cancer for about 6 years now. His cancer metastasized about 2 years ago and as of late, his health has deteriorated considerably. It was both good and hard to see him. He’s using a motorized wheelchair to get around now. It’s difficult to see what disease can do to a body. It’s a constant reminder that we aren’t of this world, we’re simply on our way somewhere else.
We watched a slideshow of memories of their work with youth groups, their kids, the coffeehouse they run and Bill’s music. Bill’s daughter, Lannea, sang a song with her Dad. I saw her little baby, Emma, who’s just beautiful. A good time of celebration and tears was had by all. God has truly surrounded this couple with His loving arms. You can see it in the love and care they’re receiving from their friends. What a gift.
So if you think of it, please pray for this dear couple. Bill absolutely has “Christ in him, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27) and the hope of heaven deep in his heart, but the transition is hard on he and Dee both.
I read this quote by A.W. Tozer and thought it was phenomenal:
A real Christian is an odd number anyway. He feels supreme love for One whom he has never seen, talks familiarly every day to Someone he cannot see, expects to go to heaven on the virtue of Another, empties himself in order to be full, admits he is wrong so he can be declared right, goes down in order to get up, is strong when he is weakest, richest when he is poorest, and happiest when he feels worst. He dies so he can live, forsakes in order to have, gives away so he can keep, sees the invisible, hears the inaudible, and knows that which passeth knowledge.
“Christ in us, the hope of glory.” The hope of the eternal burns within each one of us.
Lord help us to put our treasure in the eternal with You.
